WE ARE THE FORTUNATE HOSTS OF PILIATED WOODPECKERS LATELY. WE HAVE SSEN THEM ONLY ABOUT 10 TIMES IN THE LAST 14 YEARS. THEY ARE THE LARGEST (IF THE IVORY BILLED WOODPECKER, REDISCOVERED IN 2004 BUT AS YET UNCONFIRMED IS NOT COUNTED) WOODPECKER IN NORTH AMERICA. THEY PUNCH RECTANGULAR HOLES INTO TREES IN SEARCH OF ANTS FOR FOOD. THEIR DIGGINGS OFTEN PROVIDE HOMES FOR OTHER BIIRDS AND ANIMALS, SUCH AS WRENS. THEIR BRIGHT RED HEADS AND HANDSOME STREAKING MAKE THEM A PLEASURE TO WITNESS. THEY USUALLY TRAVEL IN PAIRS, AND WE HAD SEEN A PAIR RECENTLY (ONE OF A PAIR MADE A HOLE IN OUT LANAI SCREEN AND COULDN'T GET OUT, AS THE MATE WAS FRANTICALLY SCREECHING AS IT FLEW ABOVE THE SCENE. wHEN I GOT A BUTTERFLY NET AND TRIED TO SUBDUE IT, IT FLEW RIGHT OUT ANOTHER PANEL, MAKING A SECOND BIG RIP IN ANOTHER SCREEN TO BE REPLACED. WE REALLY ENJOY GETTING THE RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OBSERVE THEM, HERE IS WHAT WE SAW TODAY ON OUR BIG OLD SOUTHERN OAK.

Jul 1, 2010 - A pair of these were seen in May here in south east Texas. They did they're woodpecker thing in the pine trees for about a week (looking for bugs in the bark, I guess) then they moved on. Interesting looking birds aren't they? When I was growing up we called them "Indian woodpeckers" Don't know where that name came from. BTW I really like your bonsai videos. I think I'll try to do one. Best wishes.
